The Nikau Foundation Corporate Challenge has now been operating for eight years. Volunteer Wellington organise fifty business teams during volunteer awareness week each year to work on community projects throughout the region. This involves more than 700 individuals who donate 4,300 hours of work. Work undertaken includes: Painting of offices, clearing headstones at Bolton St. cemetery, environmental planting and cleanups, mentoring computer studies at Onslow College, texting classes to Age concern and tuition to Te Hopai staff on computer skills.
Wellington Free Ambulance
A partnership has been developed between Nikau Foundation and Wellington Free Ambulance for ‘Operation Heartbeat’. This is an education programme designed to educate school pupils and Business Groups in how to recognise signs of sudden cardiac arrest and how to commence CPR treatment until the ambulance can arrive. Many schools have already participated in the programme with great success and over 12,000 people have received instruction so far with a similar number scheduled for the programme in the near future.
Wellington should be the safest place in the world to suffer a cardiac arrest.
