The Nikau Porirua District Fund Committee
The inaugural committee overseeing the Nikau Porirua District Fund are a diverse group of local people passionate about Porirua and working with community groups to help to shape our city’s future.
For this committee we have adopted an approach to mix a bit of the old (ex-Trustees with Trust Porirua) with new people and ideas, ensuring diversity of experience, thought and representation.
All committee positions are voluntary, and the appointment process included advertising for expressions of interest. Committee members will have a set term and the future appointment process will be advertised.
We are pleased to introduce the 2019-2020 committee who are overseeing the early grant-making policy and direction for the Nikau Porirua District Fund.

This committee is powered by a group of highly skilled, diverse and passionate Porirua locals and backed by the Nikau Foundation’s strong governance and operations.
Porirua is my home and where my community, family and friends live. It is an honour to be chairing this team as we guide this large pool of assets to achieve funding with impact for Porirua. The dream is that Porirua will be positively transformed forever through the power of local generosity”.

The new Porirua District Fund will benefit from new economies of scale and Nikau’s legal structure as a modern community foundation gives added flexibility. We are now growing our fund while also increasing “impactful” community grants in Porirua. It’s a win-win I’m keen to support!”.

I am immensely excited to work with amazing people and organisations to enhance our beautiful Porirua”.

Former Trust Porirua Trustee and Charity/Philanthropy Manager
“It’s reassuring to know that, through Nikau Foundation, our community’s assets are ringfenced for local benefit, and will be safeguarded and grown. Our local people also now have the ability to give back and grow this significant fund for Porirua city, and we as a grants committee have the opportunity to respond to strategic, impactful initiatives. Effectively, there is a new funder in town and the potential for our community groups is huge! Ka pai rā tēnei mahi”.
Porirua District Fund – The story behind the Fund
In 2018, Porirua Community Trust engaged an independent Trust consultant, Mark Cassidy, to review management of the assets of Trust Porirua and options for the future. The strong recommendation from Cassidy’s review was that the most effective option would be that the assets be transferred to a sub-trust administered by Nikau Foundation, Wellington’s community foundation.
Trustees at the Porirua Community Trust have, over the past few months, been seamlessly working with Nikau to transfer the assets across.
Nikau Foundation is committed to ensuring that the original charitable purpose of Trust Porirua continues with the Porirua District Fund. Our aim is to utilise our investment expertise and to continue to grow this fund for Porirua and for future generations.
It is great to have several Porirua Trustees continuing on with the Porirua District Fund committee and assisting Nikau with the strategic direction of this Fund and the focus of the area’s grantmaking.
