Our aim is to help every New Zealander affect lasting change wherever their heart is. Together, we will ensure local generosity goes to local causes.
More people than ever are motivated to give back to the community where they live, work and raise a family. That’s why when Trust Porirua chose to transfer their $5 million fund to Nikau Foundation to manage in October 2018, we made a commitment to ensuring the maximum return for the community. Conserving our natural heritage, cultivating creativity, supporting youth and the health and wellbeing of our communities, we are working hard to ensure we will be there for the Porirua region, now and in the future. A vital asset in shaping the city’s future – our aim is to continue to grow the fund so that we can provide essential support for organisations that are making a difference on your doorstep. To do this, we are connected into our community working with local people for maximum impact. Our team of local volunteers help us:
- Grow our reach and build profile
- Connect us into the great and impactful work that is going on
- Help us deepen our engagement across the region
Last year, we received over 70 applications for support. With the guidance of our volunteers, the projects we funded from our named funds and the Porirua Fund include:
Te Ara Moana – Building resilience and confidence in young people through water sports
Mary Potter Hospice – A new community hospice hub for Porirua
New Zealand Festival – Supporting Porirua Festival of Youth
Māori Womens Welfare League – Cultural mentoring and support for young people
We know that there are many more incredible organisations working across the region making positive social change. It is vital that we grow our network of supporters – ensuring maximum benefit for our communities. If you are passionate about Porirua, you can get involved by:
- Giving a gift to the Nikau Porirua Fund
- Establishing your own fund or leave a gift in your will to support the region
- Volunteering your time as part of our Porirua Committee

“It’s reassuring to know that, through Nikau Foundation, our community’s assets are ringfenced for local benefit, and will be safeguarded and grown. Our local people also now have the ability to give back and grow this significant fund for Porirua city, and we as a grants committee have the opportunity to respond to strategic, impactful initiatives. Effectively, there is a new funder in town and the potential for our community groups is huge! Ka pai rā tēnei mahi”.
Porirua District Fund – The story behind the Fund
In 2018, Porirua Community Trust engaged an independent Trust consultant, Mark Cassidy, to review management of the assets of Trust Porirua and options for the future. The strong recommendation from Cassidy’s review was that the most effective option would be that the assets be transferred to a sub-trust administered by Nikau Foundation, Wellington’s community foundation.
Nikau Foundation is committed to ensuring that the original charitable purpose of Trust Porirua continues with the Porirua District Fund. Our aim is to utilise our investment expertise and to continue to grow this fund for Porirua and for future generations.
It is great to have several Porirua Trustees continuing on with the Porirua District Fund committee and assisting Nikau with the strategic direction of this Fund and the focus of the area’s grantmaking.
