More than 50 guests braved the wild weather to join Nikau Foundation donors, friends and grant recipients last week to celebrate 19 grants worth over $30,000 being given to the Wairarapa community.
Murray Johnston, chair of Wairarapa Land Search and Rescue spoke animatedly about the impact that our $3,000 grant will have on his organisation. Just a couple of hours training with a helicopter runs into thousands of dollars, the days of running a flag up a pole to show search and rescue parties that someone has been found are over. This grant will enable local volunteers to gain skills and practice with real equipment, giving them important experience.
Other organisations receiving grants included the Multiple Sclerosis Society ($4,000), Connecting Communities Wairarapa ($3,000), Carterton Town and Development Group ($2,000), Rangatahi to Rangatira Programme ($1,000), Fab Lab Masterton ($2,500) and Cancer Society New Zealand ($1,500).
